About Steel Horse Constructors
James 'Blu' Cooke spent three decades in construction, watching the same pattern repeat. Homeowners called with hope. Contractors showed up as transaction managers. The work got done, but something was missing. Trust felt transactional. Quality felt negotiated. Craftsmanship felt like a luxury item rather than a given. So in Kyle, Texas, out of a garage and a conviction, Steel Horse Constructors started. Not to be bigger or faster. To be better at what actually matters: treating your home like it matters because it does.
Early jobs taught us what we already believed. When Blu measured twice and cut once, clients noticed. When we showed up on time and cleaned up after ourselves, it got remarked on. It shouldn't have. These things should have been standard. But they weren't. And that gap between standard and what we were doing became the foundation of everything that followed. Within a few years, the work expanded beyond Kyle into Blanco County and the Hill Country. Remodeling jobs led to roofing. Kitchen updates turned into full home transformations. Each project was a promise kept or a lesson learned.
'You don't start a business to do things the same way everyone else does. You start it because you see a better way and you can't stop thinking about it.'
— James 'Blu' Cooke, Founder
Being locally owned means we live here. Our kids go to school with your kids. We shop at the same stores. When we cut corners, we see the consequences. When we do it right, we see the difference. That proximity matters more than any warranty. Being veteran owned and woman owned isn't a badge we wear—it's part of how we think. Discipline. Attention to detail. Respect for the work. Those came from experience, and they stay in everything we do. Being family owned means long-term thinking. This isn't a flip-and-move business. We're building the reputation we'll pass down. Being licensed, insured, and BBB accredited is the bare minimum. But it means something: we've met standards that matter, and we answer for our work. Over a dozen years, we've won Best of Hays County and Best of Blanco awards. But what we're proudest of is the work that earns those votes—the homes that hold families, the additions that make life easier, the kitchens where real meals happen.
Working with us means working with people who show up, listen, and follow through. We do remodeling, roofing, flooring, painting, cabinetry, concrete work, masonry, plumbing, electrical, patios, porches, additions, windows, french drains, fencing, framing, and tile. That range exists because homeowners need it and because we've learned to do each thing well. We serve Blanco County and the Hill Country. When you call, you get Blu or someone on his team who knows your project matters. Not because you're our only client. Because that's how we work.
